When tryouts were finished, Elizabeth went down to the field and approached Claire, who was toweling off her face.

"Hi, Claire. Do you mind if I just ask you a couple of questions?" Elizabeth asked pleasantly.

Claire turned to her, a frown on her face. "Questions? About what?"

"Well, that interview I did the other day . . . Penny Ayala, the paper's editor in chief, doesn't think it's really complete enough." Elizabeth got out her notepad. "Now that you've shocked the whole school by trying out for the team, we'd like to know a little bit more about your interest in football."

"Like what?" Claire asked. "I thought we already went over everything."

This wasn't going to be any easier than the last interview, Elizabeth thought. "Well, you didn't mention that you were planing on trying out for the team," she prodded gently. "Have you always wanted to try out for the Gladiators? Did you ever think about trying out for the team at your old school?"

Claire shrugged. "No one wants to hear about that kind of thing," she said bluntly. "There's nothing different about me. I'm just like any of the other students who are trying out. I just like to play football, that's all."

Elizabeth stifled a sigh of frustration. Claire was one of the most evasive people she had ever met! "Look, it may not seem out of the ordinary to you, but a lot of people are very curious about you. They want to know what's made you so interested in football—and so good at it. Did you ever have a mentor? Someone who helped train you? Did you play when you were younger, or—"

"To tell you the truth, I'm kind of tired, Elizabeth," Claire cut in. Elizabeth saw with dismay that the closed expression on Claire's face had changed to one of angry impatience. "I've had a long workout, and I really want to take a hot shower and relax a little bit. Sorry, but I don't have anything else to tell you. Like I said before, I'm not much fun to write about."

Elizabeth stared at her. "Well, if that's how you really feel . . ." she began uncertainly.

"It is. Thanks for understanding," Claire said abruptly. Without another word she spun around and walked off in the direction of the girls' locker room.

Elizabeth felt uncomfortable. Usually she was good at drawing people out, but she had sure managed to wreck this assignment. She couldn't understand why Claire had to be so closemouthed about her desire to join the team.

Elizabeth still wanted to get to know Claire better. But Claire seemed intent on keeping her feelings strictly to herself.
